Itinerary

Split /Trogir – Blue cave (Biševo) – Komiža (Vis) – Stiniva bay (Vis) – Budikovac island – Ždrilca (Pakleni islands) – Town Hvar – Split /Trogir

The Blue Cave on Biševo Island is one of those places that requires no marketing language to sell. You enter through a low opening barely tall enough for a small boat, and inside, sunlight refracts off the white sandy bottom and turns the entire cave a deep, electric blue. Words do not do it justice, which is why it has been drawing visitors since the Austrian explorer Baron Eugen von Ransonnet first made it publicly accessible in 1884. Getting there from Split or Trogir on a private speedboat, with nothing else locked in for the day, is the way most people wish they had done it.

This 10-hour itinerary covers six stops across three islands and gives you enough time at each one to actually feel present rather than rushed. It departs from the same marina as our other private boat tours from Split and private boat tours from Trogir, with a maximum of 12 guests on board.

Blue Cave, Biševo Island

The cave sits on the eastern side of Biševo, the smallest inhabited island in the area and one that most visitors never reach independently. The entrance is about 1.5 meters high, which means entry is only possible by small tender boat in calm conditions. Once inside, the cave opens to roughly 24 meters in length and 12 meters of height, with the blue glow most intense between 11am and noon when the sun angle is right. Entrance to the cave itself is paid separately on site. Your skipper times the arrival to give you the best conditions.

Komiža, Vis Island

Vis is unlike any other island on this coastline. It was closed to all foreign visitors until 1989 because it served as a Yugoslav military base, which means it developed largely without the tourist infrastructure that shaped places like Hvar or Brač. Komiža, on the western side of the island, is still a working fishing town. The harbor is lined with stone houses, a 16th-century Venetian tower that now houses the Fishing Museum stands at the water’s edge, and the pace of the place has not shifted much in decades. It is a good stop for a coffee, a short walk, and a sense of how the Dalmatian coast looked before it became a destination.

Stiniva Bay, Vis Island

Stiniva is consistently listed among the best beaches in Europe, and the reason becomes clear the moment you approach by sea. The cove is almost completely enclosed by high limestone cliffs, accessible through a narrow rock passage barely two meters wide at the entrance. The pebble beach inside is sheltered, the water is clear, and the acoustics of the surrounding cliffs create a stillness that feels separate from the rest of the day. This is one of the swimming stops where the snorkeling equipment included in the tour actually earns its place.

Budikovac Lagoon

Budikovac is a small island between Vis and Hvar with a natural lagoon on its sheltered side. The water here is shallow and genuinely turquoise, warm by mid-season, and calm enough for the two SUP boards on board to be useful. It works well as a recovery stop between longer stretches of travel, with enough space to swim, float, and take a break from moving.

Ždrilca, Pakleni Islands

The Pakleni Islands sit just off the coast of Hvar Town and are covered in pine forest that shades the stone beaches below. The name comes from “paklina,” the pine resin traditionally used to seal wooden boat hulls on this part of the coast. Ždrilca is a natural channel between two of the larger islands and one of the quieter entry points into the archipelago. If you want a longer look at the Pakleni Islands on a separate day, the Hvar and Pakleni Islands private tour covers them in more depth.

Hvar Town

The day ends in Hvar, which has been continuously inhabited since Greek settlers from Paros founded Pharos here in the 4th century BC. The main square, Trg sv. Stjepana, is the largest cathedral square in Dalmatia. The Fortica fortress above the town, built by the Venetians in the 1550s, offers a view over the entire Pakleni archipelago. After a full day on the water, Hvar is a reasonable place to have dinner before the return trip to Split or Trogir.

If you want to explore closer to home on a shorter day, the Blue Lagoon private tour covers the islands between Split and Trogir in around five hours.
